Jones Dairy Promotes Quality Product While Providing Youth Education

Jones Dairy Promotes Quality Product While Providing Youth Education Utilizing social media is just one of the ways that Jones Dairy uses to inform the public about both their product and their operation. Jones Dairy is a family owned and operated dairy near Spencer, Iowa consisting of 970 cows that are milked three times a day. I spoke with Haley and Aaron, two of Patrick and Nancy Jones’ eight children, who are the 4th generation on the Jones Dairy. Aaron is one of the three children who has chosen the

Over a Century of Tradition with Fick’s Swiss

It was milking time when I arrived at Galen & Sandy Fick’s farm. Galen was tying up the cows in the 56 cow tie stall barn, after having them outside briefly that afternoon. A typical dairyman, Galen instantly apologized that some of the cows were a little dirty after several hours outside on a dreary day, but they weren’t. Galen’s hired man, Brennan arrived at the same time I did. According to Galen, Brennan works 2 1/2 hours in the morning and 2 1/2 hours in the afternoon seven days

Once a princess … always a princess

Last night I had the chance to attend the 54th Annual New York State Dairy Princess Coronation in Liverpool, New York. For the past two years now, I have attended pageant from the stage in the front of the room, in a crown and sash, both as a county princess and as the New York State Dairy Princess. Tuesday evening was a different story, as it was the first time in many years that I attended pageant as an audience member and supporter. As different as it was to listen

Stensland Family Farms on a Rise

Nestled in the hills along the Iowa – South Dakota border is where Stensland Family Farms are located, just outside of Larchwood, Iowa. The Stensland Family Farm has been expanding since twin brothers, Jason and Justin, restarted their Grandfather’s dairy in 2003. They started with only 45 cows and have grown to a 200 cow dairy, complete with their own creamery. The heritage of the multi-generation Stensland Family Farm that dates back to 1915 is a significant factor on their time line. Jason and Justin began their dream of dairying
