DAIRYING FOR TOMORROW WINNERS RECOGNIZED AT NEW YORK STATE FAIR

New York, Pennsylvania Farmers Recognized for Community Outreach, Animal Care

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (August 29, 2019) – American Dairy Association North East presented three Dairying for Tomorrow awards during the New York State Fair Dairy Day breakfast, Thursday, August 29. The awards recognize farmers’ production practices related to animal care, community outreach and environmental stewardship in the ADA North East territory that will help sustain the dairy industry now and into the future.

King Brothers Dairy of Schuylerville, New York, received the overall Dairying for Tomorrow community outreach award; Abbie and Andrew Evans of A Joy Swiss, Athens, Pennsylvania, received the honorable mention animal care award; and Wagner Farms of Poestenkill, New York, received the honorable mention environmental stewardship award.

“Building trust by connecting with consumers is critical to protecting dairy’s image,” said ADA North East CEO Rick Naczi. “All three of these dairy farms are outstanding examples of bridging the gap of knowledge within their local communities about their production practices.”

The overall winner for community outreach, King Brothers Dairy is a fifth-generation century farm owned and operated by Jeff and Jan King, located in the Hudson River Valley. They process and bottle milk from their herd of 900 of cows, which is sold through home delivery, their on-farm store and in several retail outlets and restaurants in upstate New York.

Jeff and Jan both serve local agricultural and non-agricultural organizations, bringing awareness to production agriculture. They also interact regularly with their retail customers, sharing information about their farming practices. The Kings host various farm tours for schools and government officials, as well as “Sundae on the Farm,” a tour day that attracts more than 2,500 visitors annually. The farm is active on social media – Facebook and Instagram – which creates dialogue about food and animal care. In addition, they exhibit dairy cattle at local, state and national levels under their Kings-Ransom herd name where they interact with consumers attending the shows.

Abbie and Andrew Evans follow a strict protocol for the daily care of their dairy herd, which is housed in a freestall barn complete with new stall dividers, mattresses, fans and quality ventilation. Their calf care program is top-notch from feeding, individual and super hutch housing until weaning, and a Virginia-style heifer barn.

Wagner Farms has adopted multiple on-farm practices that protect the land, air and water on their farm and for neighboring communities, including a methane digester, cover cropping, and cleaning the road the farm is located on through an “Adopt a Highway” campaign.

Overall winners in each category receive a donation of $1,000 in their farm name to use for one of two ADA North East retail or school initiatives – dairy products provided to a local food bank, or to a local school to implement a yogurt smoothie program. Overall and honorable mention winners both received on-farm photo shoots.
