The dairy, livestock and agriculture industry has waited more than 20 years for meaningful immigration reform that will allow these farming operations access to safe, reliable labor, which is critical to milk the cows, care for the animals and work the fields.
President Donald Trump has moved immigration to the front burner with his promises to improve enforcement of current immigration law and to provide a solution to the DACA recipients. Additionally over the weekend, President Trump announced his intention to address our county’s labor needs by allowing low-skilled guest workers into our country.
“The unemployment picture is so good, it’s so strong, that we have to let people come in,” President Trump said at a rally in Michigan.
For dairy operations, processors, and other sectors of the ag industry that have year-round labor needs, current visa programs do not provide a solution to allow timely vetting of workers needed at these work work sites.  This is why the Agricultural Guestworker (AG) Act has been introduced.
Chairman Goodlatte (R-VA) of the House Judiciary Committee has recognized the dire need of farmers who simply cannot find workers willing to do the work required to keep many ag-related operations running.  Despite increasing wages and benefits, these jobs continually remain unfilled.  Without the confidence of a reliable work force, these businesses cannot grow. The agriculture industry pours billions of dollars into our national economy and is the sole source that sustains many local, rural economies. We cannot afford to let this unique opportunity to fix our nation’s broken immigration slip by without a solution that will save our agriculture industry.

The time is now to support a solution for our nation’s dairy, livestock and agriculture industry. We must either fix our broken immigration system and find a way to import labor, or we will be forced to import food produced without the same strict standards of quality and animal care enjoyed in the U.S. The AG Act is close to receiving the support it needs to be voted upon on the House Floor, but time is running out.
