A Portuguese dairy farmer invests in heifer genes from Victoria to boost ‘the beauty’ and productivity of his herd.

In what might be an Australian first, the genetics of a Gippsland cow have been sold to a dairy farm in Portugal.

The young cow was auctioned in Gippsland in Victoria’s south-east earlier this month by Lightning Ridge Genetics.

“It’s a very unique transaction,” said Declan Patten, founder of the 18-year-old genetics company that sold the heifer embryo.

“I think it’s the first time that a Portuguese buyer would have invested in dairy genetics in this country.

“The animal initiated from an embryo I purchased in Canada through my business partner and the embryo was then flown out to our operation here in Gippsland, implanted into a surrogate and then she sold at auction for $25,000……..
