Tours Highlight Tech and Management Practices to Preserve Water Quality

PDPW and UW Discovery Farms to Host 2017 Water Tours June 21 & 22

Tours Highlight Tech and Management Practices to Preserve Water Quality DAIRY NEWS – Preserving the quality of one of Wisconsin’s most precious resources – water – is the focus of two daylong tours hosted by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) in partnership with UW Discovery Farms. The tours will be held Wed. & Thurs., June 21 and 22, departing from and returning to Marshfield and River Falls, Wis., respectively each day.  The chartered bus tour will depart at 9 a.m. and return by 3:30 p.m.

The 2017 Water Tours will provide a diverse group of stakeholders including elected officials, dairy producers and community leaders, the opportunity to see firsthand the latest in water management practices and technologies in multiple settings. Participants will tour businesses, farmer-led watersheds and city systems and be part of an open dialogue to ensure a safe, affordable and efficient water supply for generations to come.

The June 21 tour, departing from Marshfield, will include a stop at the Marshfield Wastewater Treatment Plant, to see the city’s natural treatment system that uses microbes instead of chemicals to treat wastewater and to hear how city officials work with area farmers to protect water quality.  Participants will visit Eron Agronomics to see a closed loop irrigation system, and learn about soil and water conservation efforts by the Farmers of Mill Creek Watershed Council. The final stop will be a tour of Mullins Cheese to see the wastewater treatment plant and membrane system at the largest family-owned and operated cheese factory in Wisconsin.

Participants on the June 22 tour, departing from River Falls, will stop first at the City of River Falls to see storm water best management practices that follow standards above and beyond DNR requirements. They will tour Ellsworth Creamery to see the only bio tower in the state that processes food wastewater. The bio tower has lowered discharge amounts of phosphorus, BOD, COD and nitrogen in a very small footprint.  The last stop will be a tour of the Dry Run Watershed and stop at a monitoring site to hear farmers and conservation leaders share results of on-farm research and conservation strategies.
