DAIRY LEADERS OF TOMORROW PROGRAM OFFERS NEW “EXPLORATION EXPERIENCE” SERIES

“Exploring the Bovine from the Outside In” to be Hosted May 26

Harrisburg, Pa. – High school students, in grades 10-12, interested in dairy veterinary careers are invited to attend the Dairy Leaders of Tomorrow Exploration Experience, “Exploring the Bovine from the Outside In,” on Friday, May 26. The event will be hosted at Meadow Vista Farms in Bainbridge, Lancaster County, from 9 – 2 p.m. Exploration Experiences are a new supplement to the Dairy Leaders of Tomorrow high school education platform, established by the Center Foundation, and will provide students with the opportunity to apply the skills and techniques they learned in the classroom in a real-world setting.

“We’re pleased to provide this in-depth learning opportunity to students through the Dairy Leaders of Tomorrow program,” said Mary Foote, dairy education program manager for the Center for Dairy Excellence Foundation. “Not only will students participate in a unique hands-on experience, but they will be able to explore one of the many potential career opportunities available in food animal medicine and the dairy industry.”

Jared Risser, who will graduate from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in May, will lead the Exploration Experience before he joins the team at Dairy Veterinary and Management Services in Indiana. Risser will encourage students to apply their fundamental understanding of biology, anatomy, and physiology to the bovine species through both live animal and post-mortem examinations. Students will be able to witness how common diseases of cattle manifest, how they can be treated and how cattle vary from other mammalian species in terms of digestive anatomy. Attendees will also learn animal health from the perspective of a veterinarian and how veterinarians decide upon treatment recommendations.

Registration opens April 3 for the Dairy Leaders of Tomorrow Exploration Experience. Participation is limited to the first twenty-five students and registration must be made by Friday, May 12.

More information about the experience can be found by visiting the “Educational Experiences” tab at dairyleadersoftomorrow.com and selecting the “Exploration Experiences” on the left side menu. To register, visit the website or contact Mary Foote, at 717-346-0849 or via email at [email protected].
