A bill being considered by the Senate Agriculture Committee would provide grants of up to $10,000 for small farmers who have their crops destroyed by natural disasters.. Pamela Helming, the bill’s sponsor, argues it would ease financial hardships at a time when small farm operations are popping up more often, and as drought and unpredictable weather are poised to become increasingly normal in New York. […] of size, all farmers are vulnerable to the forces of nature, whether they are excessive heat and drought, flooding, or infestation. Despite a strong agriculture sector propped up by the state’s dairy and apple industries, New York has like many other states watched the number of small, family-owned farms dwindle in the last few decades, their properties sometimes swallowed up by larger firms or collectives……
