Big savings to be made from healthier and more fertile cows
The dairy industry could save money if cow health issues were improved.
Dairy farmers could save their industry millions of dollars each year by improving the health and fertility of cow herds.
DairyNZ senior scientist and team leader Chris Burke said farmers were not going to get anywhere near the target of 78 per cent of six week in-calf rates with the technologies available.
“If we’re sitting currently at 65 per cent as an average six week in-calf rate and the target is 78 [per cent], there’s a huge gap there and it’s going to take some big breakthroughs to get there.”
